Tag Glossary

Orlando's content is structured by the unique XML tagset described in the Introduction and visualized in the Tag Diagrams. To assist in understanding Search result facets and Tag Search, this Glossary provides definitions for tags and attributes (descriptors associated with tags). Some attributes have set values. These are often explained within definitions of attributes. Other attribute values, such as genre names, are defined within the ontologies of the Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory, which hosts Orlando’s production environment. Searches on this page retrieve tags, attributes, and definitions, but not necessarily attribute values.

Topic

Machine name
TOPIC

If locationtion of element attribute is expressed, tagg it as An element used in writing and encoding Orlando’s early stages but never implemented. It was to enclose topics from a pre-determined list of major historical topics including some of the scope and complexity of witchcraft or the second world war. For each of these the briefest possible account (a single paragraph) would be written, outlining key facts and dates. A links screen would point users towards this central description, as well as to all the uses of the tag elsewhere. It would be a major task to implement this tag, which has fallen out of use, though the results could be interesting and valuable.

Type of press

Machine name
PTYPEOFPRESS

This element belongs to WRITING > PRODUCTION. It encloses a word or brief statement, records certain specifics about the kind of printing operation involved. It has no mandatory or optional sub-elements or attributes. Often used in conjunction with PMODEOFPUBLICATION, it is mostly used for small, unusual, or experimental publishing ventures.

Violence

Machine name
VIOLENCE

One of the sixteen structuring big-bucket content tags in BIOGRAPHY, defined as integral to mapping a woman's life. It has no attributes or sub-elements. It is placed in a document according to the broadly chronological sequence of life-events. It represents an early decision by the Orlando team not to separate different kinds of violence by different encoding, but to encompass together institutional, marital, and other violence (marketplace whippings for Quaker preachers, wartime bombing, and family abuse). We are particularly interested in the effects of violence against women on the history of women's writing and the historical, social and political issues surrounding violence against women. This element is not reserved for actual acts of violence, but can include a discussion of the effects, short- and long-term, of exposure to violence. In some cases available data may need to be divided between Violence and some other element, e.g. FAMILY or LOCATION or POLITICS or HEALTH.

Voice or narration

Machine name
TVOICENARRATION

TVOICENARRATION is available within WRITING > TEXTUALFEATURES. It encloses a statement or discussion, and has no mandatory or optional sub-elements or attributes. It addresses the question of how a story is told: who speaks (first-person, multiple voices, omniscient or unreliable narrator, interpolations, use of fictional documents, etc), and sometimes the character or situation of the narrator(s).

Wealth

Machine name
WEALTH

Wealth is a Div1 content element, one of the 16 major BIOGRAPHY elements defined as integral to mapping a woman's life. It has no content sub-elements or attributes. It captures information about a writer's financial standing, more precise and detailed than what is conveyed within the Class and Occupation elements. We are particularly interested in whether or not her finances provided the material conditions necessary for writing. Information concerning inheritance, unearned income, tax matters, spouse’s income, pensions and personal financial disasters is captured here, but not any income directly derived from literary activity, which belongs in the WRITING doc.

Woman-Gender Issue

Machine name
WOMAN-GENDERISSUE
Value
Yes
No

This optional attribute is available in BIOGRAPHY > POLITICALAFFILIATION. It designates whether or not a person's political engagement involves a specific gender issue. This tag has three mutually exclusive sibling attributes, ACTIVISM, INVOLVEMENT, and MEMBERSHIP; it may be used in conjunction with any of them. It has attribute values of GenderYes and GenderNo.

Since we are interested in women's writing from the perspective of an analysis of gender, we aim to record all political involvement regarding gender issues. This attribute can be used whenever a political organization, activity, or affiliation involves women's issues or female political subjectivity (identification as women) very broadly defined. This includes a petition by women even if the subject of the petition was not gender-specific, as well as more obvious issues such as suffrage, marriage law, female employment, etc. A gender issue does not necessarily and exclusively refer to feminist issues but could include such woman-specific activities as anti-feminist organizations or anti-choice activists.
