Hugh Walpole founded the Society of Bookmen .

The National Book Council was formed by members of the Publishers' Circle and the Society of Bookmen to promote reading and book-distribution.

The National Book Council began publishing a monthlySelection of Recent Books Published in Great Britain, which in January 1941 became British Book News.

The National Book League was founded.

Mass-Observation published the results of a survey of 10,000 readers in a report for the National Book Council entitled Books and the Public.
