Press Council

A Royal Commission on the Press that had been established in 1947 (the first of three between that year and 1974) called for the setting up of a self-regulating body: the General Council of the Press

The report of the second post-war Royal Commission on the Press led to the reconstituting of the General Council of the Press as the Press Council.

The Press Complaints Commission , successor to the Press Council , was instituted; it proved as ineffective as its predecessor.
