's husband
died of cancer of the pharynx. He had been ill since 1868 and underwent twelve operations to treat his cancer. Jessie was a dedicated nurse to him.

Her funeral procession (which passed Casa Guidi dressed in celebration of Barrett Browning
's centenary) included a handful of surviving Garibaldians, one hundred schoolgirls carrying roses, and a group of university professors.
