Mary Stockdale

18 May 1774 - 13 June 1853

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century MS (daughter and sister of publishers, and a publisher herself) issued two collections of poetry (one including a short autobiography), besides individual poems, and several books for children, one of them translated.

MS was born in London, probably in Westminster, where she was baptised a month later

Her father's entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography must be mistaken in saying it was about 1780 that he moved south to London.

MS published her poetry volume The Effusions of the Heart through the firm of her fatherJohn Stockdale ; this was apparently her earliest publication.

MS published at her own press her elegy The Wedding Ring, A Funereal Offering, to the memory of Isabel Stockdale , wife of Jeremiah Stockdale , who died this day, on her forty-seventh wedding anniversary.

MS died at White Hall in Hayes, Middlesex, aged eighty, from erysipelas and debility. He was buried at Hayes three days later.
