Beginning with whimsy and fairy stories, she published novels, children's writing, travel books, and works about gardening and wild-life. Her fiction spans romantic sentiment, reformist social thinking, and a blend of both. Some novels are highly revealing of British imperial attitudes to racial and ethnic difference.
