JS published both children's books and adult novels during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Her final novel comments amusingly and astutely on gender relations and the writing of novels.

An anonymous three-volume novel appeared with the title Woman's Devotion; this is probably the future JS 's first book.
A mistaken attribution of this novel to Anne Marsh , with the whole chain of other works linked to it by author of claims, is mentioned by OCLC WorldCat and made in Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature and other sources.

1869

A Book of Heroines, JS 's last novel (a remarkable work which incorporates light-hearted analysis of the novel as form), sounds from its title rather like a book of biographies or advice.
