Beginning in the very early twentieth century, EM wrote and published more than fifty books, most of them popular novels but also including remarkable travel books as well as short stories, books for children, and an autobiography.

Evelyn May Clowes (who later wrote under the name EM ) was born at Cotgrave Place, Cotgrave, just to the east of Nottingham: one of eight children, six of them boys.

EM 's novel Full Circle, about the morally and spiritually empty life of a lionized author appeared with this title in England but in the USA as Gin and Bitters by A. Riposte.
