Gwen Moffat

Writing from before until after the second half of the twentieth century, GM has covered a huge span of genres. Having written poetry in youth, she turned to journalism (on outdoor subjects) when short of money. It took her a long time to realise that literary and physical interests could be combined: that a climber might be interested in James Joyce .

She published several non-fiction books—mountaineering reminiscences, works on mountain rescue and on conservation and ecology—before embarking on a long and successful career as a writer of crime fiction. Her oeuvre also includes one or two non-crime novels, and books about the American pioneers travelling southwest, and her own travels in their footsteps.
