Hannah Allgood (later HG ) was born in Greville Street, Hatton Garden, London, apparently the eldest child in her family.

By this month HG was both working on the book that became her famous Art of Cookery made Plain and Easy, and soliciting subscribers for it.

The copyright of HG 's cookery book, which she had retained at publication, was bought by a publishers' conger or temporary conglomerate headed by Andrew Miller .

HG (who was between two bouts of bankruptcy, and had had to sell the copyright of her highly successful The Art of Cookery) registered three shares in a new work, to be entitled The Servant's Directory.

HG issued by subscription The Servant's Directory; or, House-Keeper's Companion; again she published for the author, keeping possession of the copyright.
