ABC was born at Penzance in Cornwall, into a family which in the end amounted to six children, including an elder half-brother.

By February 1795

The publisher Joseph Johnson issued by subscription ABC 's Poetical Sketches: an important text in women's Romanticism.
Her title was the same as that of William Blake 's first publication, 1783. Critic Richard C. Sha points out that the word sketch (suggesting the private as well as the visual) was also used in titles by Cristall's near-contemporaries Maria Jane Jewsbury , Hannah More , Mary Russell Mitford , Sydney Morgan , Octavia Stopford , and Helen Maria Williams .

The ODNB puts her death and burial at Lewisham, but this may be confusion with Lewisham Hill at Blackheath.
