Elizabeth Beverley

-
EB 's works, all opportunistic money-raisers, are pamphlets of many different kinds, dating from the early nineteenth century. Their production was closely connected with her career as a stage performer. Some are in verse, while others draw on the genres of autobiography, allegory, sermon, and satire. Their major themes are self-publicization, and social and religious criticism of society. Some are undated, and many went through a series of allegedly new editions which are probably re-issues; almost all recycle material she had already printed.

Milestones

By late 1792

EB must have been born, since her age was given as forty at the time of her death in November 1832.
“Reverse of Fortune”. The Guardian and Public Ledger, 22 Nov. 1832.

Probably 1815

EB published what may be her earliest work: The Indefatigable, Bound on a Voyage to the Island of Liberality. Though extant editions date from 1830 and 1831, the early-dated contents suggest these are actually reprints.
