JH was a self-taught Scots working-class poet who produced four volumes of verse and essays in the later nineteenth century. Using vivid and direct language, she treats topics ranging from problems of working-class life such as alcoholism, the plight of women doing piece-work in the home, and environmental degradation, to European liberation movements which she fervently supported.
