HC was an obscure early nineteenth-century writer of religious and didactic fiction (both novels and short stories) with striking talent and intelligence, as well as a strong interest in the spiritual and material condition of the poor. Though earnest, she is also full of humour and common sense. Her most striking works were produced by a desire to answer the writings of others. She is a notable example of a writer who missed out on financial profit although her works achieved popularity.
