Belfast Ladies' Institute

The Belfast Ladies' Institute was founded in support of women's higher education by six women from prominent local families.

Queen's University of Belfast instituted examinations for female external candidates.

The Intermediate Education (Ireland) Act was passed, containing an initial recognition of the principle that girls and women had the right to sit for public competitive examinations and to take university degrees.

Queen's College, Belfast, began admitting women to honours classes.
