Charlotte Godley is remembered for her only book: a posthumously published collection of travel letters about the 'early' (mid-nineteenth-century) social life and landscape of New Zealand. Brief excerpts from her journals also survive.
Milestones
14 November 1821 Charlotte Wynne or Griffith-Wynne (later CG) was born in North Wales, most likely at her parents' home, Voelas (or Foelas) near Betws-y-Coed, now in Conwy. Bibliographic Citation link.
7 January 1850 CG wrote the first in the series of travel letters to her mother that span the period of her years in New Zealand; she began by describing her voyage on board the Lady Nugent. Bibliographic Citation link.
3 January 1907 CG died aged eighty-five, after a short illness, at her home in 11 Gloucester Place, London. Bibliographic Citation link.
