Mary Ferrar, hardly a writer herself; was the matriarch of a seventeenth-century family which lived like a religious community, and which seems to have composed dialogues and 'short moral histories' collaboratively, as well as letters individually. The only family member whose name is well remembered is Mary Ferrar's son Nicholas (who is called by some an Anglican saint, and to whom we owe the preservation and publication of George Herbert's poems).
