Joseph Conrad's publishing career spans a little over the first quarter of the twentieth century. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography judges him to be "one of the greatest fiction-writers—and probably the greatest political novelist—in English," Bibliographic Citation link. a language which he had learned as a non-native speaker.
