Well before the end of the twentieth century Margaret Atwood had become one of Canada's leading writers in many genres. If she is more widely known for her more than forty novels than for her poetry (or for her short stories, criticism, or lecturing, or editing of anthologies), that is simply a reflection of market and of readership.
