The unidentified, seventeenth-century playwright Ariadne is notable for writing—and getting staged—at least one delightful, feminist-inflected comedy.
Milestones
Ariadne's date of birth is not known; her self-description as 'young' might make it around 1675.
September 1695 The Actors' Company at Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, opened their first full season (which, remarkably, featured five new plays by women) with She Ventures, and He Wins, a singularly good-humoured comedy by 'Ariadne'. Bibliographic Citation link.
Nor is it known where or when or under what name she died; even a guess would depend on whether or not we ascribe to her the second play printed in 1698.
